March 18, 2008
Page-Walker
The meeting of the CSC Board of Directors was called to order at 7:48pm. At that time, six voting members were present, thus a quorum was constituted.
Present:
Karen Davis, President
Don Cariss, Treasurer
Geiselle Thompson, Chorus Committee Chair
Joe Ferguson, Member at Large
Donna Parker, Member at Large
Ellen Schloemer, Member at Large
Larry Speakman, Artistic Director
David Lindquist, Executive Director
Absent:
Brian Wong
David Lee
Judy Fourie
Daphne Ashworth
Prior to the Call to Order (since we didn’t realize we had a quorum with five voting members present), there was a general discussion about concert plans for the 2008-2009 season. Artistic Director Larry Speakman presented his proposed plan for next season’s concerts, including a reprise of Voices of Light, a holiday concert, works of Faure/Brahms, and “Heart and Handel” (Chamber Choir). The plan also calls for a Memorial Weekend performance with Triangle Wind Ensemble and possible additional opportunities to perform with the NC Symphony at Summerfest.
The plan will be finalized once the budget is completed. Daphne Ashworth is recruiting local sponsors to help underwrite the cost of producing Voices of Light, and Ellen S. volunteered to identify additional sponsors for this event.
Following the Call to Order, a motion was made to approve the minutes from the January 15, 2008 Board meeting. The motion was seconded and approved by the members present.
Don Cariss presented a financial report. He reported that CSC is in good financial shape, with year-to-date income of $62,727 (about where expected), expenses of $61,305 (slightly less than expected), and a net income of $1,422.
Musicales: Karen Davis reported on ticket sales to date for the Musicales events. As of March 18, ticket sales were fairly slow for all events, and she planned to promote participation by CSC members during upcoming rehearsals.
New board members: Judy Fourie is changing her status from Member at Large to Honorary Member and Brian Wong is stepping down from the Board. New Board members will include Shannon Giles, Deborah Morris, and Hal Bowman. The Chorus Committee will handle “elections” of new board members during an April rehearsal. We also discussed the need to identify board members to serve as Secretary and as President. There was also some discussion about the benefits of creating a “President Elect” position, to facilitate an orderly leadership transition. We also discussed the size of the Board, which currently has nine members but can under CSC bylaws be as large as 15 members. Those present agreed that it would be good to add local community members to the board, if these members would be active in CSC initiatives.
New Chorus Committee members: Geiselle reported that there are several new members of the Chorus Committee, and suggested we repeat the joint Board/Chorus Committee meeting in July 2008, since this was very successful in 2007. She also reported that next season’s section leaders will be Amanda (Law?) (sopranos), Terri Ring (altos), Brian Wong (tenors), and David Britt (basses). Barb Klimala will serve as the new membership chair.
Other:
Ellen Schloemer will be inviting CSC Board members and Chorus Committee members to an informal dinner at her house prior to our April 25 rehearsal with the Raleigh Symphony at Millbrook High School in Raleigh. This will be confirmed once we know the specific rehearsal time for CSC.
Joe Ferguson raised the idea of CSC holding a silent auction fundraiser next season, and there was general agreement this would be a good idea, if CSC members could be recruited to organize this event.
David Lindquist indicated that his report was the same as appears on the CSC website for March 18.
This was covered at the beginning of the meeting.
Next Meeting:
The next meeting was tentatively scheduled for April 15, assuming there are open items to discuss. Karen Davis will poll Board members to determine whether this meeting is necessary.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:45pm.
